Push Gaming: Dinopolis
Top developer Push is about to unleash another monster that could turn a dollar into a car in a single spin!
Push gaming celebrated their tenth birthday last year, but they have been a slow burner in terms of their output, focusing on quality rather than quantity. Initially, the company took the relatively safe option of building online and mobile versions of slots created by companies that made only land-based casino games. Developers such as Ace Gaming, Psiclone Games, and Magic Dreams had no online development teams, and Push knew they could be sure of making a profit if they focused on creating enhanced online versions of their games.
The strategy worked, but founders James Marshall and Winston Lee had bigger ambitions than simply porting other people’s games. In 2013, the company began quietly building an in-house team of graphic artists and mathematicians, alongside other essential personnel necessary to develop slot machines from scratch. Less than 18 months later, their first games were released to great reviews, especially Bonus Beans, which was praised for its Candy Crush style gameplay.
The team at push are showing their age with this release, as the artwork bears more than a passing resemblance to that of the American family sitcom “Dinosaurs” which aired on the ABC network all the way back in 1991. Perhaps some of the team used to enjoy the show as children?
It’s typical Push Gaming fare, high RTP (96.4%), insane variance, and a T-Rex sized largest possible win of 50,000x your stake. The slot is already being tested at a handful of sites, and according to Push Gaming two of these jackpots have already been won! I have to admit to being a tad skeptical of this claim, however, as I have studied the paytable and feature specifications and it seems that an awful lot of things would have to go your way for such a win to be achieved.
The game uses a 5-reel setup, but in a nonstandard 3-4-4-4-3 arrangement which can be both a blessing or a curse depending on circumstance. The game uses pay ways as opposed to regular pay lines, meaning that in regular play the additional three slots increase the number of ways you can score a win from 243 up to 576.
During the all-important bonus round, however, the stacked wilds are counted as just one symbol rather than four, so you’ll need to get some big multipliers in play to see the true potential of this slot. We’ll discuss this further when we get to the bonus features section later on in this review.
Symbols & Payouts
We mentioned that Dinopolis takes many visual cues from the 90s TV show Dinosaurs, but there’s a heavy sprinkling of Las Vegas glitz thrown in too, which makes for a quirky dichotomy. The base game takes place atop a Vegas-style backdrop of extravagant buildings including a statue of liberty that features a triceratops holding the torch aloft, instead of the traditional ladylike figurine.
The paytable is arranged into three sections, making it easy to get an idea of how big – or small – your win is going to be before the count even begins. There are no boring royal symbols here – Push has chosen stacks of cash, dice, poker chips, and playing cards as the low pay symbols instead. These all have identical payouts too, so a full line of any of these will always pay the same amount.
The picture symbols are represented by a variety of characters from the Dinosaurs TV show, but unlike the low pay symbols, each of these has different payouts attached to them. Finally, two high roller dinosaurs make sit atop the table, adding a third row of super high paying symbols. There is a huge jump in value between the regular dinosaurs and these super high-value dinosaurs, so you are definitely going to need a couple of these during the bonus round if you want to hit a huge win.
Speaking of the bonus round, you’ll need to hit three scatter symbols on the center reels to enter the Dino Bonus. These have no value of their own, which is a little unfortunate, but does the bonus round itself make up for this? Let’s talk about that now…
Like most slots, in reality, Dinopolis is all about the bonus round. You’ll spend most of your session hoping to hit the scatter symbols so you can play the Dino Bonus and have a chance of scoring a huge win.
The feature begins by asking you to select two playing cards. The first card will add one or more sticky wild stacks to the center three reels, which will also have a 2x multiplier attached to them. The second card reveals how many free spins you will receive – this could be 5, 6, 8, or if you are really lucky, 10.
During the Dino Bonus, several extra Dino Coin symbols are added to the reels. Landing these will fill a meter to the right-hand side of the reels. Collect five coins and you’ll once again be offered the chance to select two more playing cards which will add additional features to the reels. These cards can add extra sticky wild stacks, increase the multiplier of existing stacks, or a special gold card will reset the picking procedure allowing you to choose two further cards again.
If you can manage to pick the gold card repeatedly it is possible to get all three center reels filled with sticky wild stacks, with a maximum multiplier of 7x. Manage this, and all you have to do now is fill the first and last reels with the super high-value symbols and you’ve got yourself that magical 50,000x win. It almost sounds easy when you put it like this, but trust me, it’s very difficult to achieve!
Dinopolis: The Verdict
Ah, Push, they never let us down do they? Dinopolis is a winner for sure, as the super-high value symbols make it possible to score a decent win, even during the base game. Then there’s the Dino Bonus, which is extremely exciting when things begin to go your way and those sticky wild stacks fill the screen with big multipliers.
Dinopolis is due for wide release on the 22nd of April – Don’t miss it!
