Pragmatic Play: Power of Thor Megaways Slot Review
The Norse god of thunder and his famous hammer are back in this new slot from Pragmatic Play
Slot designers clearly believe that the Norse god of Thunder has plenty of staying power, as he makes yet another appearance in this latest Megaways-style machine from the ever-reliable stable of Pragmatic Play. Microgaming were possibly the first to utilize this character with their Thunderstruck and Thunderstruck 2 machines, both of which were wildly popular when they were released.More recently we’ve seen Thor Infinity Reels from ReelPlay, Thor’s Lightning and Thor’s Vengeance, both from Red Tiger Gaming, Zeus vs Thor from 4ThePlayer, as well as Thor and Thor2 from CQ9 and an appearance in the Age of Gods series by Playtech, to name just a few of the games featuring Thor and his trademark hammer. Does it matter if the theme is a little overused though, if the games are exciting and high-quality?
You’ll have to make your own mind up on that one, but Pragmatic Play don’t make a habit of producing bad games, so Power of Thor: Megaways has to be worth a look. If nothing else!
Overview: Power of Thor Megaways
Pragmatic Play produce a wide range of slots as well as operating their own live casino games, white label casino platform, and a range of virtual sports betting products too. This is their seventh title to utilize the Megaways mechanic, which is licensed from Australian developer Big Time Gaming by several other creators of online slots, as a result of its popularity with players all across the globe.
As a game with a maximum payout of 5,000x your stake, Power of Thor is undoubtedly a high variance game. That said, there are Megaways type slots which are hugely more volatile than this, so I can see this game appealing to some slots players who enjoy the chance of a big win without the risk of ruin so familiar to players of Bonanza or Genie Jackpots Megaways. Better still, the game has an overall fixed RTP of 96.55%, with no option for individual casinos to select from multiple different RTP settings as with titles from some other developers.
Nearly all of Pragmatic Play’s slots feature an RTP above 96.5% – a respectable number for any online slot, but an outstanding one for a game with the ability to pay out over 5,000x your stake. All Megaways slots utilize a six-reel layout and a variable number of pay ways, which maxes out at an impressive 117,649 when the best possible arrangement of symbols appears on-screen.
Symbols & Payouts
Few risks have been taken with the design of the symbols used in Power of Thor. The usual royal symbols (10 through Ace) are used for the lower paying combinations, whilst the picture symbols look to be comprised of predictable Norse characters such as Thor, Odin, Loki, Heimdall, and Freya. We wouldn’t expect anything else from a game based on Thor, but a little more creativity could have been used – there is little in the visuals department here that we haven’t seen a dozen times before.
A six-reel combination of Thor symbols pays out just 20x your stake, too, which isn’t fantastic for the games best paying symbol. As with all Megaways slots though, winning combinations are immediately removed from the reels and any symbols which are removed are replaced by new ones, which can result in many consecutive wins from just a single paid spin.
A standard wild symbol is also included, but can only appear in the additional boxes located above reels two through five. What you really want to see is Thor’s hammer appearing in these same positions, as this will trigger a stacked wild feature on each connecting reel. If you have six symbols displayed on a reel that is topped by Thor’s hammer, all six symbols will be replaced by the stacked wild and a number indicating just how many wilds that reel now represents.
If you can manage to score a hammer on all four of the center reels, in addition to lining up a symbol or two on reels one and six, your winnings could well reach outrageous proportions. With a stated maximum win of 5,000x your stake though, this effectively means that 250 rows of Thor symbols would represent the games best win. This suggests that’s the reel strips are very carefully ordered to prevent anything too crazy from occurring on a single spin, which seems a little disappointing.
As mentioned in the previous section, the tumbling reels feature common to all Megaways slots is also included here, but with no additional twists to give it any additional excitement. It’s great to have the opportunity to win several times whilst only paying for a single spin, but adding some sticky wilds or other features tied to Thor’s hammer could really have given this game a little extra edge over other games based on Thor or the Megaways mechanic.
The hammer feature mentioned in the symbols and payouts section is also regarded as being a special feature, and that’s fair considering it is the only way to activate the games stacked wilds mode. The hammer itself is a double-wide symbol, however, and has no payout linked to it directly. It’s possible to get half a hammer only on reels two and five, which not only does not activate the hammer feature, but it also blocks other potential winning combinations as well.
The main bonus feature is a free-spins based onus round, but it is very hard to trigger as it requires landing a minimum of four scatter symbols to spell out THOR across the reels. Fortunately, the symbols do not need to be located in order, but the minimum of ten free spins awarded for four scatters makes it difficult to reach the higher multipliers during the bonus round. A gamble feature is offered, allowing you to risk your ten free-spins for the opportunity to receive the maximum of thirty instead.
If it’s taken many spins to receive a free spins feature, it can be soul destroying to lose them by risking a gamble. On the other hand, the reason Megaways machines are so popular has always been the insane payouts offered by the infinitely increasing multipliers offered by their bonus rounds. If you do choose to go for a gamble, set a target and stick to it – fifteen to twenty free spins have huge payout potential, and is much easier to reach than thirty.
Power of Thor Megaways: The Verdict
There is little here to separate Power of Thor from most other Megaways slots, although the wild reels offered by the hammer feature do make an interesting change to the formula. The problem is that the hammer feature often will not stay active following more than one or two rolling reels features – if you are lucky – and the overall maximum win of just 5,000x your stake feels very low compared to games that pioneered the Megaways concept, such as Bonanza.
There are other Megaways slots with Viking-based themes too, such as Blueprint Gaming’s Vikings Unleashed, which has a much higher maximum win of 50,000x your stake. And you’ll find games with even higher maximum wins if you are more concerned with pay out potential than the theme used in the game.
Although Power of Thor certainly isn’t Pragmatic Play’s best work to date, it is still a fun game and will likely enjoy a large audience during its release period simply due to its use of the Megaways branding. It just feels like so much more could have been done with the licenses required to produce this title.
