Overview: Gems Bonanza
This is the latest in a line of gem-based cluster play slots, this time with an 8×8 grid, an Aztec theme, and an entertaining array of ‘level-up’ features. Gems Bonanza is due for release on the 29th of October but the games developers have decided to give us a sneak peak in the form of a demo version. The game plays with the maximum volatility that Pragmatic Play has to offer – a whopping 5 lightning bolts. At first glance it seems like it’s going to be a colourful, arcade-style affair. Let’s see if this video slot has what it takes to hit those big wins.
Symbols and Payouts
It’s immediately evident that the game has the potential for nice payouts, with a top paying symbol that awards 1,000x the bet for 25 or more matching symbols, and 1x the bet for 5 of a kind. All symbols pay in blocks of 5 or more symbols that can be connected both horizontally and vertically. The 8×8 slot has a total of 64 symbol slots and incorporates the tumble feature, which makes the possibility of landing 25 matching symbols realistic enough.
There are 8 symbols on the paytable excluding the wild. The top payer is the red ruby symbol. Following the rubies, the gems descend in order of value to purple, green, turquoise, yellow, pink and blue diamond gems right at the bottom. The blue diamond symbols pay between 0.1x and 50x the wager. Payouts for all the gems work on a type of sliding scale, so the red rubies will pay out 200x if you strike anywhere between 20 and 24 of them.
The bets on Gems Bonanza start as low as 0.20 when you’re playing the lowest coin value of 0.01, and they go as high as 100.00 if you’ve selected the coin value to be 0.50. The theoretical RTP is within the industry standard range at 96.51%. A nice touch that they’ve added to this slot is that when there are multiple winning blocks or clusters on the screen, it pays for all wins. The maximum win possible is over 10,000x the stake.
The tumble feature is in play throughout the game, which means that after each spin, or bet, all winning combinations are paid and the winning symbols are removed to make place for new symbols. The remaining symbols drop down to fill the spaces left by the winning symbols that vanished and additional symbols fall from above. The tumbling continues until no more winning combinations land, giving players the opportunity to strike numerous wins on a single wager.
While the tumbling takes place, the aim is to collect winning symbols that will unlock the main feature of the slot, The Gold Fever Progressive feature. Spin modifiers can be activated along the way which helps to score extra winning symbols. On every spin, the number of winning symbols that were collected get added to the Gold Fever meter board on the left of the screen. The feature begins at level 1 when 114 points have been achieved. During level 1 there is a 2x multiplier in play and the levels progress through additional levels in the following way:
- Collect 116 winning symbols to progress to level 2 which plays with a 4x win multiplier
- Collect 120 winning symbols to progress to level 3 which plays with a 6x win multiplier
- Collect 125 winning symbols to progress to level 4 which plays with an 8x win multiplier
- Collect 132 winning symbols to progress to level 5 which plays with a 10x win multiplier
The feature ends if you fail to collect enough winning symbols to unlock the next level, or when all the tumble features in level 5 have been played. The key ingredient that makes the Gold Fever feature so exciting is that every level that is played is guaranteed to feature each Spin Modifier at least once. The Spin Modifiers are also in play during the base game.
Spin Modifiers are a luminous colour mark that emanates from behind the regular gem symbols on the grid. Each colour unlocks a different spin feature that is triggered when a winning combination lands on the specially designated colour slot. They can appear at random and have different functions:
Blue Modifier: Nuclear
The Nuclear Feature means that after all the tumbles in the current spin have finished, the screen is cleared of ALL the symbols and a whole new set of fresh symbols are brought onto the grid.
Pink Modifier: Wild Gem
The Wild Gem feature means that after all the tumbles in a spin have been completed, a random symbol is selected and all instances of that symbol appearing on the screen will transform into Wild symbols. Wild Gem is one of two features that incorporates the wild symbols.
Brown Modifier: Squares
When the Squares feature is in play, large blocks that incorporate 2×2 matching symbols are added to the grid in random positions.
Red Modifier: Colossal Symbol
This feature is similar to the Squares feature. The only difference is that a matching block symbol is added to the screen that might be either 3×3, 4×4 or 5×5 in size.
Green Modifier: Lucky Wilds
This is arguably the most exciting feature. After all the spin’s tumbles are finished a bunch of Wild symbols are added to the screen in random positions. The number of Wilds that are added will range between 5 and 15. This is the second feature that includes Wild symbols.
If more than one feature is won on the same spin, they play consecutively following each other in the same order as they are listed above: Nuclear, Wild Gem, Squares, Colossal Symbol, and Lucky Wilds.
Verdict: Gems Bonanza
This is an easy little video slot to get into and take your mind for things for a while. It may sound like there are a lot of features to muscle through, but most players will quickly get the hang of them. There’s a little magical and soothing soundtrack playing in the background that makes the gaming session feel quite relaxed as well. We definitely recommend giving it a try. Even if you’re not usually into 8×8 tumbling slots, Gems Bonanza may just surprise you.
