Where to play?
Aztec Gems Deluxe is a brand new online slot for 2020 by Pragmatic Play. It’s the sequel to the Aztec Gems slot, which came out in 2018. Set deep in the jungle, it has an Aztec theme, a medium to high volatility and a pretty good RTP of 96.5%, which is above average. The reels are set within a decorated golden block which is surrounded by jungle plants, with a faded river and waterfall seen in the background.
The slot uses a 3×3 grid and has nine paylines in total that winning combinations can be formed on. In order to win, three matching symbols need to land on a payline. All nine of the slot’s paylines are included in all bets. You’re able to bet with a range of amounts, going from 0.09 all the way to 90. There’s an autoplay feature you can turn on that has the slot do the spinning for you between 10 and 1,000 times. You can opt to have the reels spin faster than normal, if you wish.
Symbols and Payouts
The slot has five standard symbols and these are different-coloured gemstones (yellow, green, blue, purple and red) inlaid in gold blocks. The red gemstone is the one to look out for, as this is the slot’s most valuable standard symbol, giving you a payout worth 10x your total bet for landing three on one of the slot’s paylines.
However, the red gemstone isn’t the most valuable symbol overall – the wild is. This is represented as a gold totem mask and gives you a win worth just less than 28x your total bet. It also substitutes for all of the slot’s standard symbols and can help you form winning combinations.
As well as the wild, the slot has a scatter symbol that’s represented as an ornately decorated blue coin. This doesn’t give payouts by itself; it only gives you wins through the slot’s main feature.
Aztec Gems Deluxe has one main special feature: the Money Respin Round. This is triggered whenever you spin the reels and four scatters land anywhere on the grid. If this happens, all of the scatters remain where they are and the other symbols vanish. You then get three respins, with the reels containing scatters and empty positions only.
If you spin and a new scatter lands, the number of respins you have resets to three and the new scatter also remains where it is. Once all respins have been used up, if there are eight or fewer scatters on the grid, you’ll receive a prize for each one.
If you manage to fill the grid with nine scatters, one of two things can happen: you’ll either get a multiplier that’s applied to your Money Respin Round wins, or you’ll get to spin the Wheel of Fortune. The possible multipliers you can receive are x2, x3, x5, x8 and x10.
If the Wheel of Fortune feature comes into play, you get to spin a wheel to earn an additional prize on top of your Money Respin Round wins. These prizes are as follows: 18, 28, 58, 88, 108, 128, 188, 288 or 388 times your total bet. You may also win one of the slot’s four jackpot prizes: the Mini (100x your bet), the Minor (250x your bet), the Major (500x your bet) or the Grand (1,000x your bet).
Whether you manage to fill all nine positions of the grid or not, the Money Respin Round can be quite lucrative.
Verdict: Aztec Gems Deluxe
Aztec Gems Deluxe is a new online slot that’s themed to Aztecs and has a jungle setting. It’s similar to the original Aztec Gems slot in its design and theming, yet it drops the original’s multiplier reel and adds a respin round to replace it. This respin round works better as it offers you the chance to earn some extra wins; you can even win a multiplier that’s applied to your wins, or win an extra bonus payout on top of the ones you’ve already earned.
Overall, this newer version is an improvement on the first instalment because of its respin round. What also makes it more appealing is its higher single win amount (1,000x for the Grand Jackpot compared with 375x in the original). Aztec Gems Deluxe isn’t the most innovative or original slot, but it works well enough and its respin round may give you some decent wins if you’re lucky enough.
